The Writing Process
Writing at the Bee develops gradually, moving from creative exploration to deeper work in voice, fiction, reflection, and literary craft.
Some participants arrive with a clear desire to write fiction. Others come searching for expression, reflection, creative renewal, or a meaningful literary space in Brussels. The Bee welcomes both beginners and more experienced writers through a process that unfolds progressively over time.
The Introductory Session
The Introductory Session is a 2-hour literary writing gathering for those who wish to discover the atmosphere and approach of the Bee Writing Lab before joining a Lab or literary pathway.
Through writing exercises, literary exploration, discussion, and shared reflection, participants experience the spirit of the Bee in a small and welcoming group setting.
Held once every month.
The Inspirational Lab
The Inspirational Lab is the foundational 10-session Lab of the Bee Writing Lab.
Through prompts, images, close reading, observation, and carefully designed exercises, participants begin exploring language, imagination, memory, rhythm, and voice.
The Lab is open to beginners as well as returning writers and offers an introduction to both creative and literary writing.
For many participants, this first stage becomes the beginning of a deeper writing path.
Following the Inspirational Lab, participants may continue through one or more literary pathways according to their interests and creative direction. They may move towards fiction or reflective writing, and participate in the wider literary life of the Lab through gatherings, readings, and community events.
The Pathways
Fiction & Literary Craft
A pathway devoted to fiction, narrative development, and literary craft through two successive Labs: the Story Lab and the Craft Lab.
Story Lab
A 12-session course devoted to the making of story and character
Guided by the Bee’s Filter Method, a process based on the idea of learning to write creatively by learning to read creatively, and on the concept of “filters” as a way of focusing on different story elements, participants gradually develop their stories.
The Lab is designed both for beginners discovering fiction and for writers wishing to deepen and structure their storytelling practice.
Craft Lab
A 14-session course devoted to narrative craft
Through close reading and writing exercises, participants work on point of view, voice, narrative time, dialogue, scene and summary, pacing, setting, suspense, and narrative perspective.
The Lab focuses on developing greater control, precision, and awareness in the shaping of fiction.
Mentoring
Individual mentoring is available for participants developing longer fiction projects, including short story collections and novels.
Writing & Reflection Lab
This pathway is devoted to developing attention and expression through language.
Through writing experiences, reflective exercises, and shared literary exploration, participants explore experience, memory, and expression through prose writing.
Many participants are people in transition, newcomers to Brussels, returning writers, or individuals seeking a meaningful creative practice within a literary environment.
Literary Gatherings
The Bee also organises literary mornings, salons, reading evenings, retreats, masterclasses, and collective writing experiences.
These gatherings bring people together around around literature, writing, reflection, and conversation.
